The food of the future

Everyone, including me, loves to eat. What is nice about eating is that it is crucial to survive and it is awesome to do. In the future, people will likely still love to eat, but their way to eat might be different comparing to today’s. Technology is being a part of our lives much more than it used to, but believe it or not, it will be even more in the next years. In fact, today’s 3D printer might be everyone’s food maker of tomorrow.

How it works

Printing food is much like printing normal 3D objects, but instead of plastic inserted in the printer, it is vitamins, protein or all kinds of nutritional elements. The thin needle at the end of it makes it so that it can create a lot of details and forms, but because of that, it takes quite a long time to create that type of food. However, the food’s taste stays the same and it is easier to swallow. The only thing that changes is the texture of it. Moreover, those 3D printers can print according to the type of life of a person. For example, an athletic person will have more protein than a sedentary one.

Why will we use them?

3D printers have been a part of our lives for quite a long time now. Its ways to create real detailed 3D pictures has already amazed a lot of people. However, some scientists wanted to do something bigger, more interesting and more revolutionary. They wanted 3D printers to be able to print food in the future. To this day, 3D printers are able to prepare simple things like candies or chocolate in many different shapes or size and can be found in laboratories and even in some restaurants. In addition, as stated in the NASA website, 3D printers will be used to feed astronauts who are gone in space for a long period of time, like when they will reach Mars. Furthermore, printing food might help a lot against one major health problem which is starvation. A lot of poor countries would need 3D printers to be able to feed their civilians for a long time. Anjan Contractor, the director of that huge project, confirmed that the cartridges of powder used in them would be fresh for about 30 years while still being 100% nutritional. In short, 3D printers will be used to feed the astronauts and the poor people.

Benefits/inconvenients

3D printing food machines offer a new way to create food by having a lot of benefits. The possibility of having a personal diet within the 3D printer will definitely make people’s lives easier and healthier. Moreover, the fact that they will be used to feed the astronauts when reaching planet Mars or even farther planets makes it one of the greatest inventions of all time. However, their price is very high: a range from $500 up to $10,000 for the restaurants, so not everybody can afford it. In short, they have a lot of benefits even though their price is high.

In conclusion, 3D printing food offers a green way to create food. In fact, the powder used in them is biological. The project of the future for printing food is to make printers faster and being able to create complex dishes.
